Als Sojourner Truth (1851) während ihrer Rede auf einem Frauenkongress in Akron (Ohio) die Frage stellte, ob sie denn keine Frau* sei, brachte sie eine Debatte ins Rollen, die noch heute von großer Bedeutung ist. Sie hatte nämlich gleichermaßen weiße Frauen* für den Rassismus und Schwarze Männer für den Sexismus kritisiert, den sie Schwarzen Frauen* jeweils entgegenbrachten. Doch wie verliefen die Schwarzen feministischen Debatten seither? Natasha A. Kelly, Wissenschaftlerin, Kuratorin und Buchautorin, gibt Einblick in Terminologien und Entwicklungen des Schwarzen Feminismus bis heute. Ihr Buch dokumentiert die Kontinuität dieser Theorietradition anhand ausgewählter Texte, die erstmals in deutscher Sprache erscheinen und so einem breiteren Publikum zugänglich gemacht werden. 

Eine Schwarze Feministin war Natasha A. Kelly in der Praxis schon immer, die Theorie kam später durch ihre wissenschaftliche Mitarbeit am Gender Institut der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin hinzu. Heute ist sie in diversen frauen*politischen Kontexten aktiv, zuletzt als Filmemacherin des preisgekrönten Dokumentarfilms Millis Erwachen.

Black Feminism: book presentation and discussion

When Sojourner Truth (1851) asked during her speech at a women’s congress in Akron (Ohio) whether she was not a woman, she initiated a debate that is still very important today. She had criticized both the racism of white women and the sexism of black men against black women. But how have black feminist debates gone since then? Natasha A. Kelly, scholar, curator and author, provides insight into terminologies and developments in Black Feminism to the present day. Her book documents the continuity of this theoretical tradition by means of selected texts, which are being published in German for the first time and thus made accessible to a wider audience.

Natasha A. Kelly has always been a black feminist in practice, theory came later through her academic work at the Gender Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin. Today she is active in various women-political contexts, most recently as the filmmaker of the award-winning documentary film Millis Erwachen.
